Yashasvi Jaiswal, the dynamic Indian opener, stands on the cusp of achieving a historic milestone. He is just 97 runs short of becoming the fastest Indian batsman to reach 2,000 Test runs. The young left-hander has the opportunity to surpass Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing, 49-year-old record when India squares off against England in the second Test at Edgbaston, commencing on July 2nd.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is closing in on a major Test record.
Jaiswal's consistent performance has been a significant positive for India, especially during this transitional period in the longest format of the game. He recently demonstrated his exceptional talent with a magnificent century in the first Test at Headingley. However, his impressive effort wasn't enough to prevent India from succumbing to a five-wicket defeat. Despite setting a challenging 371-run target for England, India was taken by surprise due to the calm and composed chase led by Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, which gave England a 1-0 advantage in the five-match series.
Team India preps for the second Test match against England at Edgbaston.
Jaiswal's individual form remains a key source of hope for India as they strive to make a comeback at Edgbaston. He has accumulated 1,903 runs in just 20 Tests, maintaining an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record for the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs is held by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who achieved this milestone in his 23rd Test back in 1976. Gavaskar later became the first cricketer in history to score 10,000 Test runs. Following Gavaskar on this prestigious list are Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, who both reached the 2,000-run mark in their 25th Tests.
With his elegant strokeplay and remarkable composure, Jaiswal now has a golden opportunity to join and even surpass these legends, providing India with a much-needed boost in a crucial, must-win Test match.
