In a public plea, Armenian chess grandmaster Levon Aronian has urged Vladimir Kramnik, a former World Champion, to reconcile amidst a defamation lawsuit. Aronian's letter, shared on social media, expresses deep respect for Kramnik, acknowledging his significant influence. This follows Kramnik's lawsuit against Chessdom, GM David Navara, and others, stemming from disputes over alleged online cheating.

In a public display of emotion, Grandmaster Levon Aronian has penned an open letter to Vladimir Kramnik, urging his former mentor to reconsider his recent actions, including a defamation lawsuit that has polarized the chess community.

"Dear Vladimir Kramnik, forgive me for addressing you publicly," Aronian began, his words reflecting respect for Kramnik, the former World Champion, despite the current dispute.

The letter follows Kramnik's decision to file a civil defamation case in Geneva against Chess.com, news outlet Chessdom, and Czech Grandmaster David Navara, after accusations of online cheating.

Aronian’s letter serves multiple purposes: a personal tribute, a public statement, and an intervention. He highlights Kramnik's pivotal role in his development, referring to him as one of his "chess parents," acknowledging Kramnik's influence on his chess style and understanding.

He fondly recalls Kramnik's career milestones, from his victories over Garry Kasparov and Peter Leko to the controversial "Toiletgate" match against Veselin Topalov, lauding his strength and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.

However, Aronian addresses what he perceives as a worrying shift in Kramnik's behavior. "You are fighting your own demons," he writes, alluding to the emotional strain of Kramnik’s relentless campaign against alleged cheating in online chess.

The plea follows earlier events this year when Kramnik insinuated that Navara had cheated, which prompted Navara to publish a letter outlining the severe impact the accusations had on his mental health.

Kramnik responded by demanding legal action or silence, ultimately resulting in the defamation lawsuit. This action has triggered criticism from across the chess world.

Grandmasters like Pavel Eljanov have voiced support for Navara, with Eljanov stating that Kramnik had overstepped the mark, adding that "David is one of the most honest people in chess.”

Aronian concludes his emotional message with a plea for unity: “We are a family... let us start from a fresh page.” Amidst division within the chess community, Aronian’s message offers hope for reconciliation and understanding.
