Manchester United have officially confirmed that new signing Matheus Cunha will inherit the prestigious No. 10 shirt, previously worn by Marcus Rashford. The announcement, made on Tuesday, adds further fuel to speculation surrounding Rashford's future at Old Trafford.
As reported by ESPN, the decision to hand Cunha the No. 10 jersey signals a shift in the team's dynamic. Cunha, arriving from Wolves in a significant £62.5 million ($84.6m) deal, sported the same number during his time at Molineux last season.
Rashford has been absent from United's squad since December, spending the latter half of the previous season on loan at Aston Villa.
The 27-year-old England international has been instructed by club officials to postpone his return to Carrington as he explores potential moves away from the club. The rest of the squad commenced preseason training on Monday.
Several other players, including Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, and Tyrell Malacia, have also expressed their desire to leave United this summer. They have been granted extended leave to facilitate potential transfers.
The club anticipates that all five players will return to Manchester United later in July if their desired moves fail to materialize.
The squad is scheduled to embark on a three-game tour of the United States, commencing in Chicago on July 22.
Aston Villa have opted against exercising their option to permanently sign Rashford for £40m. This valuation remains consistent for any club expressing interest this summer. However, United have yet to receive any concrete offers.
Sources indicate that Rashford's representatives are optimistic that Barcelona will intensify their pursuit, particularly after Nico Williams committed his future to Athletic Club by signing a new long-term contract.
Bayern Munich are also reportedly searching for a winger and had previously shown interest in Williams.
Barcelona have also expressed interest in Luis Díaz. However, Liverpool have maintained a firm stance against considering any offers for the Colombian player.
Rashford reportedly prefers a move abroad and desires to compete in the Champions League, according to sources.
With three years remaining on his current contract, Manchester United are open to considering season-long loan offers, provided they can significantly reduce their wage bill.
